Are You Getting Enough Vitamin D? Healthy Habits

Are You Getting Enough Vitamin D?

If you want to remain strong and healthy well into your golden years, then you should start considering how much vitamin D your body is getting. Vitamin D not only keeps your bones strong by helping your body absorb calcium, it also helps your immune, muscle, and nervous systems function properly. In fact, recent research indicates that vitamin D deficiency may be linked to a higher risk of breast cancer.

Here are some tips on how you can boost your vitamin D levels:

  1. If you like spending time outside, you’re in luck. By spending only 15 minutes in the sun for three days a week, your body can get the recommended dose of vitamin D. Just don’t forget to wear sunscreen!
  2. Taking supplements is an option, but it can be dangerous. So talk to your doctor first to find out what your vitamin D serum level is in order to determine how much you actually need.
  3. Incorporate it in your diet. Many fish, including salmon, herring, catfish, oysters (are oysters fish?), mackerel, sardines, and steelhead trout, are rich in vitamin D.  Also, milk and some brands of yogurt, orange juice, and soymilk are fortified with the vitamin.
