Taking It Back to the Tap

If water isn’t your best friend, it should be. Humans need H2O to survive, and it’s much healthier than the sugar-filled sodas, juices, and energy drinks that line the aisles at the grocery store.

Before you grab a plastic water bottle, head to your kitchen sink. It’s time to return to the tried-and-true tap — it’s better for the environment and our bodies. Did you know that tap water is the most affordable and regulated choice for drinking water? Drinking eight glasses per day of New York City tap water costs about 49 cents per year — and 500,000-plus samples per year are tested to meet purity standards.

Here are some tips to keep you hydrated and healthy:

  1. Help keep the water safe.

Everyone has a role in protecting the water supply. Before you throw away medicines, birth control, paint, motor oil, pesticides, cleaners, and other chemical-based products, talk to your local health or hazardous waste departments about how to safely dispose of these products.

  1. Filter it!

Home water filtration systems can remove many contaminants, including hormone-disrupting compounds in pharmaceutical products. Both Brita and Procter & Gamble (maker of PUR filters) say their filter pitchers remove more than 96% of pharmaceutical contaminants. These pitchers contain granular activated carbon filters.

  1. Pack your own bottle.

Plastic water bottles are bad for your health and the environment. Filling up your own water before you leave the house is a sure way to save money and avoid the unknowns of bottled water. Fun fact: Almost half of all bottled water actually IS tap water, bought from municipalities and bottled by private companies.

  1. Make sure to use a stainless steel, glass, or BPA-free plastic bottle.

You’re nailing the “bringing a water bottle from home” thing, but what is your bottle made of? Grab a stainless steel or glass bottle to be safe. There are great options for stainless steel water bottles, and glass water bottles are gaining popularity — just make sure they don’t have a plastic liner. If you must use a hard plastic water bottle, choose a BPA-free option.
